The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is going back to its Season 1 roots, length-wise. TVLine has learned exclusively that the Amazon awards darling’s upcoming third season will consist of eight episodes. That puts Season 3 on par with the series’ Emmy-winning first season and two episodes shy of Season 2’s 10-episode haul.
Production is currently underway on Season 3 ahead of a late 2019 premiere.
Back in December, series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino told TVLine that Season 3’s exact episode count was under “debate,” with fellow EP Daniel Palladino elaborating, “Amazon has given us some flexibility so we can see what stories we have. And we want to see what we can produce without killing everybody, including ourselves.”
“Some of the stuff we’re talking about might take time,” Sherman-Palladino added. “We’re just trying to figure out how to make sure everything good gets on the screen.
As previously reported — but unconfirmed by Amazon — a portion of Season 3 will be shot on-location in Miami. At the end of the comedy’s second season, Rachel Brosnahan’s Midge accepted an offer to join crooner Shy Baldwin on a tour of the U.S. and Europe — and ditched fiancé Benjamin to spend one more night with her ex Joel.
“I think I’ve heard that we’re going to Miami in June. That’s all I know,” co-star Tony Shalhoub teased back in February to ET Online. “I don’t know what that [involves]. It’s about [Midge’s] tour, but that’s all I got.”

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Amazon’s Golden Globe Award-winning series, is set to return for a second season. This is old news if you’ve been following the careers of Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino, who last gifted the world with the Gilmore Girls revival. In April 2017, Amazon picked up Mrs. Maisel as a two-season order, one month after the pilot premiered to rave reviews. Fast-forward to October 2018: Rachel Brosnahan and the Palladinos are Golden Globe and Emmy winners, and Tony Shalhoub has another delightful role to his name as Midge’s father Abe, and a third season has already been ordered. It’s unclear if Midge’s career will actually take off (either thanks to the secret recording or more good stand-up shows), whether Susie (Alex Borstein) will ever get a working bathroom, and if Joel will ever get out of the dog house. Here’s what we know so far:
1.Season two will premiere on Dec. 5. Amazon announced the premiere details on Oct. 24, just weeks after the show picked up eight Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Rachel Brosnahan. Amazon also released a new trailer:
A teaser was released in August (please take note of Abe doing lunges):
2. The season premiere will reportedly take place in Paris. This, according to TVLine, paired with all the behind-the-scenes photos Brosnahan has shared since early spring, when production began. (I see you, beautiful macarons, the Big Wheel, Brosnahan holding a baguette, and all the snails.)

3. There will be 10 episodes. Amazon’s two-season deal with ASP and company consisted of a total of 18 episodes. There were eight in season one, leaving 10 for its sophomore season.
4a. Midge will still be the star of the show. As Brosnahan told IndieWire, “Midge’s three very distinctly different worlds” as a mother, daughter and “wife…ish” will continue to be the show’s main focus. “By the time we leave her at the end of season one, she’s a working woman with a job, and she’s also trying her hand at stand-up comedy,” she said. “And those three worlds, they don’t work together very well. So I look forward to watching her struggle to maintain those three different identities simultaneously.”
4b. Expect to see a “new level of confidence” from Midge. In an interview with E! in July 2018, Brosnahan said season two Midge will be “feeling good, she’s on a roll, I think she feels like she’s arrived at her voice and she’s excited to grow it from there.”

5. Joel’s future is uncertain, but that might just be the show runners trying to keep things on the DL. In January 2018, Michael Zegen, who plays Midge’s husband Joel, told PEOPLE he has no clue where his character will end up in season two. “Amy and Dan, the creators – I think they just want us to be surprised,” he said. “And I don’t mind that. I like that. As far as what I would like to happen… I don’t know if I can say anything without giving too much away. But I would just like to see Joel be happy.” As the season two trailer shows, Joel is still very much in the picture, but as an ex.
6. Then again, they have a kid to take care of. At a TCA panel in July 2018, Brosnahan hinted that Midge and Joel will still remain in each other’s lives for the sake of their young child. “They will never be able to be without each other in some capacity, and [that] creates a dramatic tension,” she said. 7. There will be some push back when it comes to Mrs. Maisel the comedienne. Speaking to Bustle, ASP said while the first season was about Midge and Susie’s friendship and the growth of their manager-client relationship, season two will explore how people outside of that relationship will actually react to Midge’s progress in the comedy world. Remember, no one close to Midge (except for Susie and now Joel) really knows about her stand-up. “[It] will be something that will probably be pretty prominent,” ASP said. This better not mean Abe and Rose stepping in to stop their daughter from answering her true calling. Stay out of it, Papa. Don't you have important work to tend to at Bell Labs?

8. Midge and Susie are going on the road. As ASP told The Hollywood Reporter after the 2018 PGA Awards, 'I want to see those two girls stay some nights in shitty hotels and playing some dumpy clubs.' The duo's stops will include the Catskills, the 'Borscht Belt,' where everyone from Joan Rivers to Buddy Hackett frequented for three decades until the early '70s.

9. Lauren Graham has been pitching ideas to the Palladinos to appear on season two. Again, from ASP's THR interview: 'Lauren wants to be something very specific. She has it all figured out.' Might I suggest the role of a friendly innkeeper named Lorelai who meets Midge and Susie when their tour takes them to a small Connecticut town? Either way, things are looking way up for this plan. 'I gotta get my girl Lauren on the show,' ASP also told THR. 'I want to have her on it.'
10. One new face that’s been confirmed is Zachary Levi of Chuck fame. Per THR, Levi’s recurring role is an “eclectic Manhattan doctor who suddenly starts orbiting the Weissman/Maisel world.” The TV alum was most recently seen in the CBC/Netflix adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s book, Alias Grace. He played the Jeremiah the peddler.

11. Expect different Maisel worlds to collide. According to Brosnahan, this means that you’ll see “characters interact who have never interacted before, so almost anything we say is a massive spoiler.” (via E!) I hope this means Midge’s parents will accidentally catch one of her shows. Can you even imagine?
12. The show’s already been renewed for a third season. Per Variety, Amazon has already given the green light for season three. In May 2018, Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke confirmed the news following ASP’s acceptance speech at the Peabody Awards, where Maisel was honored. “You’re going to give it to us because we’re bringing home the fancy thing, right?” she said on stage. According to Variety, season three will likely get 10 episodes.
If all goes well, don’t be surprised if Amazon orders more seasons. During ASP’s Golden Globes acceptance speech, she joked about how “every check cleared” with Amazon and expressed her gratitude for the company. “We could not have found a better partner; we’re never leaving.”
